Overview of 2nd Grade

Second Grade is an outstanding year of learning, exploring new ideas, friendships and growing in confidence and abilities! It’s a time to enjoy reading and to claim some authors and titles as our own.

Our research project early in the year acquaints us with the work of quality authors.
We work with the library staff to identify characteristics these authors use in their writing and then to incorporate these characteristics in our own writing. Our love of words is recognized as we read and write and is emphasized in our vocabulary work. Figurative Language seems to be everywhere in literature!Writing in Second Grade includes expository and narrative, letter writing, an autobiography, retelling true events, and poetry.

Reading is at the core of our literacy program. Children work in guided reading groups with an emphasis on comprehension, decoding strategies, and vocabulary. A goal is for every child to enjoy reading as an independent activity. We want it to be a preferred choice; then we’re sure to have a reader!

In Second Grade, we study Everyday Mathematics. This program helps us look at our world in a mathematical way. We problem solve and learn to “think outside the box” before we zero in on the recommended method. We learn through hands-on experiences and logical thinking as we emphasize quality work, understanding the process, skill development and accuracy.

Woven through the year are various science and social studies units. As we focus on each one, we use our literacy skills to read, write and record observations and knowledge. In science, we study plants, weather and fossils. Our social studies units emphasize New England Colonial Times, Early Littleton, Geography of the World and an overview of other countries.

Our goal for every child is to gain pride in themselves as they meet the challenges of the Second Grade curriculum!
